Transcendence
of Self Is a Way of Life (Cosmic Consciousness) is used by
The Michaels Foundation, Inc. as a secondary textbook. The book is
one of the fruits of Jean Barr’s own decades-long search for God, for a way to
develop the closest possible relationship with Him. It was born out of the classes she
teaches for others seeking self-mastery, balance and transcendence.
As her early students began to achieve these goals, and as more students began attending
classes, it soon became apparent that the principles Jean teaches should be collected in
one document for easy reference. This was done in response to a request from a mother who
wanted to get the information to her grown son, who was having a difficult time. The book
began as a 10-page document, which Jean faxed to her.
When Jean’s students saw the document, they urged her to put it into booklet form,
and a couple in Illinois undertook the task. Yet this was not enough, because the students
also saw the material as something they could give to friends and family who were seeing
the immense changes in their lives and wanting to know the "how" and
"why" of what they were doing.
So, in 1998, Jean wrote the text for Transcendence of Self Is a Way of
Life.
A
publisher was located: Minerva Press of London, who brought out the book in August, 1999.
The book was deliberately kept small so that it
could fit easily into a purse or briefcase and kept handy, for it is not a book that can
be read once and put on the shelf. The only way we can break old habits and create new
ones is through repetition. We urge all who obtain the book to read it every week and
refer to it as needed. Even its author, who has been living by its principles for many
years, still reads the book periodically and finds great comfort in the truths it
contains.
ON THE BACK COVER …
During the time the book was being written, one of Jean’s students read a speech
given by His Excellency Vaclav Havel, president of the Czech Republic, and requested a
copy. The speech revealed Mr. Havel to be a leader of great spiritual insight, who
understands transcendence to be the only true solution to the problems of the world. Jean
wrote to him, told him of our work and, when the book was halfway completed, asked for and
was given permission to put his picture and a quote from his speech on its back cover. We
are honored to have received this recognition from a man who has devoted his life to
freedom and to finding ways to bring humanity together in peace.
